Our organising skills were really tested by one of the smallest events we’ve ever hosted, when we arranged a Christmas party for children at Acorns - a local hospice in Walsall.
The children were happy, very welcoming and keen to participate, despite each facing a range of challenges in their everyday lives. Our challenge was to match their determination and find ‘sensory’ activities and gifts they could enjoy, with their families’ and carers’ support too.
A wintry grotto for Father Christmas, carols with a guitar accompaniment, tactile crafts and stories read by unfamiliar voices were all part of the entertainment, together with a festive tea in a themed dining room for everyone involved.
It proved to be one of our most memorable events; the children took us back to what Christmas is really about.
And there’s more –look out for another instalment next week!
